Stalker: Call of Pripyat

The third installment of the series brings the best of both the earlier games and makes it better.

The Stalker series is one of the few survival horror games that can scare the living daylights out of a person. The previous games in the series: Shadow of Chernobyl and Clear Sky both have been placed around the same location known as “The Zone” and the third installment also continues in the same area.

Followers and fans of the game would recall “The Zone” as the area around Chernobyl which has been wiped out in a nuclear accident. The area has mutated creatures and radioactive zones spread across the wasteland. In the third installment you are placed in the boots of a Ukranian security agent “Alexander Degtyarev”. You are sent into the zone to collect information after a number of helicopters sent in crash at the site. You must search the wasteland, talk to people and gather intel on the area and the crashed helicopters.

Unlike the previous two games, Call of Pripyat is better tweaked overall from graphics to AI. Thankfully, I didn’t encounter even a single game crash, where as in Shadow of Chernobyl, the game used to crash every now and then. The graphics of the game have slightly improved over the previous games and come into notice more when the DX11 mode is enabled under Windows 7. However, the overall graphics do not offer any substantial changes and look quite dated in front of other games such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 or Crysis. As sound plays an important role through-out the game, the effects are very well done. The overall atmosphere, enemy units, bandits, and the in-game videos have clear and effective sound output.

The game’s AI has been improved and the buggy faction balance system from Clear sky has been removed. The game is a horror survival after all, so ammo and food both are in short supply. The head-on into the action approach doesn’t work here, and stealth is an important tool. The game now feels more realistic as well, as now not everyone tries to kill you. Humans trying to survive on the land, or bandits who are after the artifacts talk to you, and warn you rather than just attacking blindly on sight. The mutated creatures have new additions which are much dangerous and intelligent than anything offered by the previous games.

Thankfully, this time Stalker:Call of Pripyat’s storyline connects to the first game and that helps set the pace of the game. All in all, the third installment in the stalker game is worth spending your hard-earned money on.
