Toy Story 3 review

This isn’t another one of those quickly hashed together movie to video game remakes. Toy Story 3 is actually a fun game for younger audiences, especially fans of lovable characters like Woody and Buzz Lightyear.

Toy Story 3

It’s no co-incidence that the Toy Story 3 game has the same title as the movie. The launch of the game coincided nicely with the movie. And the company that developed the game (Avalanche Software) is owned by Disney-Pixar, the makers of the movie. Essentially a platforming game for younger fans of the Toy Story universe, the game actually complements the movie well. It won’t give away too much of the movie, yet follows the plot and recreates the characters perfectly. Fans of the movies will no doubt enjoy the cutscenes, which bear an uncanny resemblance to the movie itself. If you’ve ever played any of the Ratchet & Clank series, the platforming action will seem quite familiar.

Toy Story 3

You start off with Woody and his horse Bullseye chasing a train to thwart the baddie (Hamm the pig) who’s flying around in his spaceship. You have to get through the moving train and kill all of Hamm’s goons (a scene reminiscent of a level in Uncharted 2). The graphics and environments are not aiming to be ultra-realistic, but cartoon-like, except they have much farther draw distances. The controls are fairly straightforward, though not all actions are available all the time. For example, auto aiming at targets only works when you’re in plain sight of an enemy. But inexperienced gamers will find it easy to adjust to the game. It constantly offers video tutorials and quick hints depending on how you’re doing. The game also sets difficulty levels automatically. If you breeze through missions easily, they get harder, but if you keep failing a mission, it gets easier so that you can complete it.

Toy Story 3

The eight main levels in the game are based on the characters of Toy Story and the basic premise of the new movie. You can choose your character and start off with several missions; painting the buildings in the faux western town, rounding up cattle, finding bells or competing in races. Successful missions can get you cash. In the meantime, you can also harvest gold from the ground to earn more money and then buy stuff. Each successfully completed mission rewards you with a new unlocked item. The ‘Story Mode’ eight levels have hundreds of missions, but there’s more once you’ve completed all. An open ‘Toy Box’ mode lets you explore an open world, customize it to your liking and interact with all the various toy people in it (even dressing them up, or making them larger and smaller).

Overall, the game is a fun joyride, even if some of the missions in the Toy Box mode seem repetitive. It’s not a game for everyone; especially those adults used to M-rated games like Call of Duty, Halo or God of War. These people will find the game and its hundreds of tiny missions too childish and maybe too easy. But for ages 4 to 15, it’s a fantastic purchase.

The game is available for the PS3 (Rs 2,499), Xbox 360 and PC (Rs 799)
