The original H.A.W.X never really found too much of a fan following and I can't figure out a reason for a sequel to a game that didnt get too much attention in the first place. It isn’t that H.A.W.X was a bad game in anyway, but then it didn’t offer too much new for a seasoned gamer. None-the-less UBISOFT has released Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X 2, currently the only new flying combat game available in the market. We got an Xbox 360 review copy and here is the game review.

H.A.W.X 2 continues the game where the original game finished. This time the H.A.W.X squadron gets missions spread over the Middle East. The main campaign has you flying in the shoes of the Americans, British as well as Russian characters. The overall story revolves around a stolen nuclear missile and its recovery and the game unfolds as you progress. The goal is of course to kill the bag guys and save the world. The game doesn’t let you get bored as there are plenty of aircrafts to go around, new weapons keep adding up there are various types of missions. This time you don’t get just stuck as the pilot throughout, you also get to become the gunner in certain missions which keeps the excitement going. Sadly, another new element of the game, the manual landing and takeoff proved to be a major pain. It took a number of tries to get the aircraft to land as the control factor while landing turned out to be very clumsy.

In terms of graphics, the game is terrific. The visuals are remarkable with high detail in the environment. The aircrafts look superb and I loved the use of high definition satellite maps for various missions. The sound effects are also very well done. The atmospheric and explosion effects along with ambient noises were very realistic and only added to the overall game play.
The AI of the game turned out to be a mixed bag. At times, the team mates just played the role of spectators, whereas other times they provided support where it wasn’t needed! The enemy units had a better AI and they went in for the kill as much as possible. As the game progressed the harder it became to fulfill missions as the level of the AI also increased.

The trouble of the game turned out to be the level restarts. Once you fail in a mission or are killed, the game brings you back from the last checkpoint with the same damage and enemies that were present when you reached the checkpoint. So, if at your last checkpoint, you had 1/4th health and you had 3 enemy units behind you which eventually led to your aircraft being destroyed in the previous attempt, you are stuck in the same situation over and over!
Overall, H.A.W.X 2 is a good air combat game, but it doesn’t offer anything too extraordinary that makes it a must buy game of the season for every gamer. However, if you are into air combat, then this is the game for the season.
