Out of all their glorious creations, Metal Slug, SNK's 2D Side Scrolling/Platforming shoot em’ up, is right up there with the best. The franchise has been released on a variety of platforms in the past decade or so, and the latest iteration/installment of the series manages to bump its way back to the PSP with Metal Slug XX. The new title, developed by Atlus, features an all new campaign mode, a total of six new characters to choose from, dozens of new and exciting challenges, along with a wireless two player co-operative mode, Metal Slug XX is packed with a lot of content, and most of it is actually fun.

If you consider the story and the various plots, the Metal Slug franchise has never really been driven with a decent narrative or a good side-story as such. The characters however, have certainly gone on to become pop-culture icons of the Gaming Industry. The group, like always, is very distinct and insanely hilarious that includes the Legendary Mighty villian General Morden and his stupid soldiers, and this time around they have decided to take over Garbage Island. Command HQ is dispatching six amazingly skilled fighters ; Tarma, Marco, Fio, Eri, Ralf and Clark to put the cunniving General Modness out of his misery. There are plenty of things to be checked out such as the Combat School, the ranking list (offline only, for the Main Mission), or you can check the list of rescued Prisoners. The concept of Combat School is actually a pretty darn good one, especially for newcomers, but being Metal Slug, it will be a pretty easy game to get into, but mighty tough to master. One thing’s for certain, you’ll definitely die a lot, no matter if you’re playing with a friend or without one. The good thing is though, the number of tries/lives you get to complete the entire thing is unlimited. However, there are no checkpoints within a mission, so it will be very difficult to actually beat the Main Missions without unlimited, or at least a lot of tries and continues.

The Main Mission will take you across several maps and backdrops, each packed with General Morden’s soldiers, heavily armored vehicles, and a final boss. The gameplay is mostly all run and gun, except for maybe a few occasions where you’re required turn up a crank by pressing a button rapidly, pretty much like a QTE (Quick Time Event). The arsenal of weapons is mind-boggling good, but you spawn with only a default pistol and a total of ten hand grenades. Once you actually rescue a few Prisoners, they’ll leave behind power-ups, grenade launchers, heavy machine guns, shotguns, rocket launchers, laser guns, the Iron Lizard, and some more. Other weapons include molotov cocktails and some cannon ammo for the slug. Metals Slugs and the sheer variety of forms now accessible is truly amazing. We have the old school classic Metal Slug, Slugnoid, Slug Trolley, Slug Armor, Ostrich Slug (Holy Moses!), and Slung Gigantus. As you can see, a lot of these were very new to me, but all are amazingly fun to use.

When you happen to run out of lives and wish to continue, you can select different characters right in the middle, without any issues whatsoever. All characters have certain special skills and moves which can be strategically used in a lot of ways, but they basically fight and play out in a very similar fashion to one another.

As far as the visual and audio presentation is concerned, Metal Slug XX features the same look and sounds that fans have come to expect from any Metal Slug installment. Gun Fire, Heavy Vehicles, grenades, launchers, and the gruesome boss fights---amazing stuff, really. Also, the signature funny animations are all in there as well.

Overall, Metal Slugg XX is a fantastic addition to the already surmounted stature of the Metal Slung franchise. The content on offer is not only staggering, it is choc-a-block full of exciting moments, featuring the deadliest gun fights, explosions, and incredibly heavy armor Slugs. The Wireless Multiplayer Component featuring two player co-op play is a lot of fun. The characters and the varied selection of fighters, including the various bosses and villains, play an important part in shaping up the entire experience. With Metal Slug XX, you can expect a whole lot of fun, while on the go, and that pretty much says it all. Highly Recommended!
