Transformers - War for Cybertron (PS3)

Expectations and excitement drove many people to grab the retail box of the first
ever Transformers game that was out on PC. “Oh you mean a game based on that
movie with cool effects and lots of robots, which could switch between humanoid
forms and a vehicle the very next instant, while we watched with a stupid grin on
our faces? Damn straight dawg!” Despite the hype that the movie brought along, the
game based on the same was a bit lack luster. Even if you happen to have grown
up with 654614654654 million transformers action figures under your pillow back in
the day, or had every season of the great television show in your DVD collection,
you might as well agree that it was too linear in terms of game play, the level design
was somewhat poor, the environment was rather confined, the missions in the game
were weird and Optimus Prime spent most of his time driving around on the map,
with random time trials instead of kicking some, pointing a finger at his opponents
and laughing at them. Traveller's Tales averted a huge disaster, but the game was
nothing special either.

High Moon Studios seemed to have been watching from the bushes and learning the
tricks of the trade. Their mission seemed to be a rather tedious one but an ambitious
one too, as they had to undo/redo most of the stuff that TT games had imposed on
the player with the first ever Transformers game. The “holier-than-thou” attitude that
War for Cybertron brings along is no gimmick. Transformation from/to a humanoid
form or a vehicle is not incorporated for the heck of it, but rather emphasizes on the
correct usage of each form. Thanks to the level design which makes it a mandatory
requirement for the player to decide the correct form, in the wake of the situation
at hand. The gameplay seems to have been overhauled with more emphasis on
strategy, to create more than just another third person shooter. The player can make
a melee-sauce out of anything in mid-air with a quick dash and could be transforming
into a fighter jet the very next moment to flank enemy positions. The focus has
completely shifted from a noob-canon with 1000 lol-grenades to “Hey, I just turned
myself into a tank. You didn’t see that one coming, did ya? Boom!” The single
player campaign is satisfying to say the least and just a stepping stone to the super
addictive co-op campaign mode. Borrowing influences from the multiplayer aspect
of most of the shooting games, War for Cybertron promises a 10 player chaotic
showdown where the balance can shift between the Autobots and Decepticons in an
instant. This aspect alone contributes to the competitive side of the game that would
keep 10 people frantically mashing buttons to gain back the control and be the victor.

Just like Strategy games have Army Painters, High Moon realized that the hardcore
fans of the franchise would settle for nothing less than full customization of their
character for each class. The chassis and custom paint jobs add to the bells and
whistles as you watch your mean machine in your favorite colors flying around
and stomping the yards of those who thought you were just another push-over.

Many titles have failed to live up to the hype that surrounded them during their
initial previews and press releases. However, High Moon has struck a home run
with this one. War for Cybertron promises an excellent single-player campaign with
one hell of a conquest and co-op mode apart from the ability to keep the player
busy with color and chassis customization. The simple yet fascinating concept of
bringing those Transformers action figures from under your pillow to the world of
life in 3D, Transformers: War for Cybertron has brought along an unforgettable
experience. High Moon has raised the bar quite high with War for Cybertron and
any studio that touches this franchise from here on, would have to think hard.
