Split/Second is undoubtedly one of the best arcade style racers ever conceived, platform no bar. Just what the doctor ordered for overcoming all the boring realism elements of a typical simulator. Split/Second is all about racing and tremendous destruction, which in turn provides amazing amount of entertainment and superb replay value.

Simmer two delightfully entertaining concepts/productions and you get pure awesomeness. According to my judgement, the freshly baked arcade style racer, Split/Second, is basically a product of the combination of The Running Man and Mario Kart, with the exception of the fact that anything that can possibly blow up, indeed will. Nah, that’s not accurate enough. Everything will sure as hell explode. And to be honest, the entire setting doesn’t even have to make any kind of numbing sense, because basically, it’s like a fake reality show, with loads of explosion and riveting amount of destruction. To be honest, this particular element is very refreshing, because as the racing genre has gotten more photo-realistically accurate in its visual presentation, a highly infused doze of ridiculousness has been needed to basically balance out all the boring simulation/realism elements. That’s exactly what Split/Second manages to bring to the table.

Even though most of the experience does indeed feel like crazy reality TV show, but that almost instantaneously fades to the background as you go through the in-game tutorial, following by a season or two. The tracks are just mind-bogglingly over-the-top, ranging from an active nuclear power plant to flammable airport with actual planes zipping across the runway. Without the usual rubber-banding AI, the boats and other exploding elements might level the playing field a bit, but Split Second

there’s no other to land yourself in fifth place other than to zoom ahead to first. Much of Split/Second’s awesomeness lies in its power-play dynamic, which basically allows the player to trigger an explosion of any magnitude, such as a flaming truck falling from the sky, an overhead chopper crash landing in the middle of the tracks, that’s the kind of stuff real explosions are made of. If you aren’t careful, you’ll basically sabotage yourself, and that will tend to happen a lot in the later levels, when the opponents will try pull out the same dirty tricks on you.

There are certain instances that can indeed make the on-road blasts oh so interesting, as you’re provided with the option to change the course if you’re in one of the higher places nearing the end of the race. Basically, you can easily trigger a volatile/seismic event of sorts that creates havok in the road, forcing all the racers to go down. The only bad thing is that the courses are used too often and so many times, but the good thing is that there are no rules.
