The best options for laptops across budgets

Desktops and laptops are meant to make our life easier, but choosing the right one amongst hundreds of available options is a daunting task. Specifications and features in the computing world change faster than you can reach into your pocket for the cash. With that in mind, these are some of the best options across price points that have weathered the test of time.

Price Range - Up to 25,000

1. Samsung N150 (Rs 18,000) – The N150 is the cheapest netbook available that comes with an OS preloaded. The 10.1” netbook comes with an Intel Atom 1.66GHz processor, 1GB DDR2 RAM, 160GB Hard drive, 3 in 1 card reader and runs on Windows XP Home OS. In terms of connectivity it skips on Bluetooth and only has WiFi capabilities. On a 6 cell battery the netbook claims an up to 8.5 hours of battery life.

2. Lenovo S10-3 Moon/Wind (Rs 20,500) – Both of these sexy looking netbooks come with 2GB of DDR3 RAM, an Intel Atom 1.86GHz processor,10.1” display and a 250GB hard drive. They feature Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity along with a card reader, Ethernet and a 1.3MP webcam. The netbooks come preloaded with Windows 7 starter edition and boasts of up to 10 hours of battery life!

3. Compaq Presario CQ42-300 (Rs 25,000) – For those looking at a larger display, the Compaq Presario CQ42 is the ideal option. This 14” notebook comes with Intel Pentium 2GHz processor with 2GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive along with Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity. With a matte black finish, this notebook doesn’t come preloaded with an OS, so keep that in mind when going for this.

Price Range – 25,000 – 35,000

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 13 (Rs 28,200) - Powered by AMD Turion Neo X2 processor at 1.5GHz, the Edge 13 is a departure from the sober design of the ThinkPad series having a striking glossy lid and plastic body with tapering metallic lines completing the stylish look. It comes with 3GB RAM, 320GB Hard-drive and ATi Radeon HD 3200 graphics with a 13.3" display screen.

2. MSI CR620 (Rs 31,800) - The MSI CR620 notebook features a 15.6" display and features a full keyboard along with the number pad! Powered by the Intel Core i3 M330 processor running at 2.1GHz, the notebook comes with 4GB RAM, 320GB hard-drive, Intel GMA graphics along with WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity. The laptop comes preloaded with Windows 7 Home Basic preloaded.

3. Acer Aspire 4745 (Rs 34,000) - This offering from Acer has literally no match when it comes to features offered at this price point. It comes with an Intel Corei3 2.26 GHz processor with 3GB of RAM and 500GB Hard drive. With a 14" HD LED display the laptop comes with Win 7 Home basic OS and has WiFi, Bluetooth as well as webcam with Dolby stereo speakers.

Price Range – 35,000 – 50,000

1. Lenovo Z560 (Rs 38,500)- The Z560 from Lenovo bring in a Core i3 Processor, 3GB DDR3 RAM, 500GB hard-drive and a 512MB dedicated nvidia Geforce GT310 graphics card to a budget offering. With a 15.6” LED display, the notebook also has card reader, Bluetooth, WiFi, 1.3MP camera and comes with Windows 7 Home Basic preloaded.

2. Samsung NP R-480 (Rs 43,000) – The Samsung notebook looks uber stylish and bring with it Core i3 processor, 4GB DDR3 RAM, 500GB Hard drive and Bluetooth, WiFi connectivity. It also boasts of an anti-bacteria spill proof keyboard, Windows 7 Home premium as well as an unbelievable dedicated graphics card with 1GB memory.

3. HP Pavilion dv6-3056TX (Rs 45,000) – This HP notebook bring with it a 1GB graphics card at this price on a 15.6” display which is rare. It runs on Core i3 2.4 GHz processor, 3GB RAM 500GB hard-drive and comes preloaded with Windows 8 Home premium operating system.

Price Range – 50,000 – 75,000

1. Apple MacBook 13 (Starts at Rs 54,990) – The new MacBook comes with a white plastic unibody design, brilliant glass display, Apple's characteristic flair and the capable MAC OSX Snow Leopard operating system. There's enough power on tap too, with the latest Intel processors and Nvidia graphics cards. But perhaps the biggest advantage of these machines is that they can run Windows 7 just as well as OSX.

2. HP dv6-3049TX (Rs 54,000) – This 15.6” notebook from HP boasts of an Intel core i5 processor running at 2.4GHz, 4GB RAM, 640GB hard-drive and a dedicated graphics card with 1GB memory. It comes preloaded with Windows 7 home premium and features the usual Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity.

3. Sony VPCS137GG (Rs 65,000) – The sexy looking 13.3” notebook from Sony weighs a mere 2Kg, but doesn’t get light on features. It comes with an Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB RAM, 500GB hard-drive and nvidia 310M graphics with 512 MB dedicated memory. The notebook comes preloaded with Windows 7 Professional and has Bluetooth, WiFi, webcam as well as a fingerprint sensor.

Price Range – 75,000 and above

1. MSI GT640 (Rs 1, 00,000) - If its performance you're after, the GT640 won't disappoint. With a Quad Core processor and nvidia Geforce GTS 250M 3D graphics, this laptop is good enough to play for all the latest games. To add to the baling, it also has brushed aluminum surfaces and red painted accents (which were not to everyone's tastes). Basic specs include an HD15.4” TFT LCD, HDMI output, Blu-Ray drive, Windows 7 Home Premium and support for up to 4GB of 1066/1333 MHz DDR3 RAM.

2. Apple MacBook Pro 15 (Rs 1, 19,000) – The MacBook Pro comes with an all metal unibody design with a multi-touch track pad and a superb 15” display. It has an Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM, 500GB hard-drive and a Geforce GT330M graphics card. Running on the Snow leopard OS, the machine boasts of a phenomenal battery life of up to 8 hours!

3. Alienware M15x (Rs 1, 00,000 onwards) - Alienware is a force to reckon with in the gaming circles and the M15x is perhaps the most powerful 15-inch laptop around. It features the best components that money can buy, an out-of-this-world design, dazzling light effects and superlative performance. As is usual with Dell machines, it can be completely customized to suit your tastes. The one to buy if money is no object.
